Relations are optional - they are still a bit experimental, but the guys in the Netherlands are using them a fair bit. They are also the only "clean" way to tag if multiple routes share the same road, since with way tagging you can only have one reference number per street, whereas with a different relation for each route a given street can belong to each different relation.

I must confess to only using way-tagging so far - I haven't used JOSM for a while!

I like the improved rendering too. One more minor point: making the pubs prominent is fine, but the markers tend to obscure other stuff at some zoom levels.

Main point of this post: Jean and I have completed lcn_ref tagging for LCN's 6 and 0 in Camden and Westminster and 14 in Islington (we'll update the wiki to show that).

I'm now wondering whether we should be using relations, as described at http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/index.php/Relations/Proposed/Routes .

It's great to see all of these new improvements making their way to the cycle map. Thanks for your continued efforts Andy!

In case anybody else is interested in adding a few mileposts as well, the tagging I've been using is ncn_milepost = dudgeon | mccoll | mills | rowe, where those are the surnames of their designers. In case you're not sure of the types, you can use the photos to match each type:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/tags/mccolltypemilepost
http://www.flickr.com/photos/tags/millstypemilepost
http://www.flickr.com/photos/tags/rowetypemilepost

I'll get round to producing a proper feature proposal on OSM at some point...

I've still been intending to finish tagging LCN 24 (as it is in Carshalton), to date I've seen it signed as NCN22, NCN20, NCN24 and LCN24.
I must get around to finding where it continues south to.
