Did you already look at this? Any better?

I notice that there's a short layer of "hill coloring" added above the SRTM data from Lerwick to somewhere in Russia, but can't find any info on it. What is it? Also, http://maps.refuges.info/ is using ASTER data now, limited to the same area as SRTM, though.

Wow; Newer, More advanced and worse... Good job ASTER guys, So downsample a lot and use for => 60°? If you got the money you could use the "New HMK" (Whatever that means) from Lantmäteriet of Sweden. It has an effective resolution of 0.5m in one direction and 2m for the other, which one that was the altitude I don't know but at that resolution does it matter? I know at least that one can clearly see tiny ditches and houses, even where the top notch is and the edge of the roof. I does not think that all the data is available yet, but one can download some sample data somewhere - even raw laser scatter plot data.

It will probably cost something in the future as their other products do; But probably not too much. If a small group goes together It will probably be possible to raise the money needed, at least for the most interesting areas like the mountains and areas around the seven largest cities. Here is a link (In Swedish): http://www.lantmateriet.se/templates/LMV_Page.aspx?id=15971

I know that a full coverage of Aerial/Satellite photos of in grayscale (most colors is pretty dull anyway, one could colorize it with LANDSAT 5 data, it is the same data as Google maps - at least east of Uppsala) would cost about 4 Million dollars as of todays exchange rate.

I am looking desperately for height information north of 60°N (because I am living and working on 61°N). The data from viewfinderpanorama.org seem to have a license problem, but would it be possible to include them into opencyclemap as an separate layer where you have to agree first before viewing it? If not, the ASTER-data might be helpful for Scandinavia even if they are not as good as SRTM. But it is better than a flat OSM-world.

The OpenCyclemap really could be great for Scandinavia because there are no cycle maps at all here - even if you want to pay for it.

This exactly mirrors my experience of trying to create hillshaded colour relief maps for an area of Kenya. Initial excitement rapidly evaporated when I looked at the resulting moonscape. The mole runs, pits and striping artifacts rendered the data (excuse the pun) near enough useless and I reverted to the excellent SRTM data. Here's hoping they manage to calibrate/clean it.

Very interesting, thanks for taking the time to do that. I'll stick to SRTM if/when I get around to rolling my own contours.
